From Ben Tre to the Netherlands: how coconut water from the Mekong Delta ends up in your fridge.
Cocoxim comes from Ben Tre, the province in southern Vietnam they simply call the coconut land. Along the arms of the Mekong the palms grow right down to the water, and whole villages have lived off the coconut harvest for generations.
Behind the brand is Betrimex, which has been processing and exporting coconut there for more than forty years. The water is packed right after harvest using Tetra Pak direct UHT technology, so the taste stays as it came out of the nut. Cocoxim is now sold in more than forty countries.
We tasted it in Vietnam and thought it should simply be available here too. So we brought it to the Netherlands. No concentrate, no added sugars, exactly what was inside the nut.
In Ben Tre the nut is harvested and processed within hours. The water goes straight into the carton: no concentrate, no preservatives, and still twelve months of shelf life.
Not every nut will do. Coconut water is harvested while the nut is still young: that is when the water is at its clearest and sweetest. Too early and it is watery, too late and the flavour flattens out.
Betrimex has worked with coconut farmers in Ben Tre for more than forty years. In 2018 an organic farming programme covering 10,000 hectares started there. The packaging is carton rather than plastic or cans.
